			<content:encoded><![CDATA[Savvy network managers are using open-source software to provision new, inexpensive virtual servers, fueling the exponential growth of server clusters, server farms and Web applications. However, just throwing additional servers into the mix is an inefficient way to add capacity. Efficiency requires that loads be properly spread across resources, and that's where load balancing solutions prove their mettle. Load balancing reduces latency, improves throughput and eliminates bottlenecks. 
Coyote Point Systems takes the appliance approach to load balancing, offering four different appliances. These devices differ based on design traffic load and subfeatures, but they all share the same management console and basic feature set. I tested one of these units, Coyote Point's top-tier E650GX (V8.6) appliance, for ease of use, feature set and suitability to task.

<i>PRESSEMEDDELELSE</i><br /><br />København den 23. februar 2007<br /><br /><b>Undgå overbelastede websites</b><br /><br />Tusinder og atter tusinder gæster på centrale, danske websites om transport og vejr må gå forgæves, netop når opdateret information er allermest nødvendig. Det er resultatet, når vejret skaber kaos, og informationsudbyderne ikke har skalerbare systemer; men sådan behøver det ikke at være. Virksomheder og myndigheder kan nemt sikre adgang til deres websites – også under snekaos og storm af forespørgsler.<br /><br />Netop som alle står og skal bruge oplysninger om vejr- og transportsituationen, giver webserverne op. Alt for mange forespørgsler nedlægger serverne til frustration og ærgrelse for både brugere og de udbydere af data, som har det som deres vigtigste opgave at sikre tilgængelighed til kritiske data på Internettet.<br />Situationen opstår med jævne mellemrum. Nogle brancher har lært lektien og har implementeret teknologi, som kan håndtere et pludseligt, voldsomt stigende antal besøgende. Det gælder eksempelvis i Rejsebranchen. DTF-Travel har flere end 100.000 betalende brugere, som jævnligt deltager i onlineauktioner om nedsatte rejser. Fra beløb under 30.000 kr. kan man implementere en teknologi, der gør, at man undgår den situation,” siger Bjarke Alling fra Liga – dansk grossist inden for kommerciel open source software.<br />Når et websites oppe- og svartid er en yderst kritisk faktor, sikrer Coyote Point Equalizer, at der altid er en webserver tilgængelig for brugeren. Equalizer undersøger, hvilken server i netværket der er mindst belastet, og dirigerer forespørgslen til den maskine. Fordi Equalizer på en intelligent måde tildeler forespørgsler, kan alle servere i netværket arbejde på deres maksimale kapacitet. Det betyder, at der ikke er nogen servere, som bare står standby, mens andre har for meget at lave. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <br /><b> Fordeling af trafik – når der er brug for det &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </b><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Med Equalizer kan man let bygge højt tilgængelige, fejltolerante websites. Når Equalizer opdager, at en enkel server er overbelastet, vil trafik automatisk blive omdirigeret til de øvrige servere. For 100 pct. redundans kan en anden Equalizer blive konfigureret som backup-enhed. I praksis betyder det, at man i en krisesituation kan fordele den aktuelle trafik mellem flere datacentre.<br />”Man kan forestille sig, at man dagen inden en forudsigelig snestorm aktiverer sine beredskabsservere. Når trafikken når maksimum i det ene datacenter, så ledes forespørgslerne bare videre til det andet. Man kan også benytte de servere, som ellers bruges til Intranet, storage eller andet som nødberedskab,” siger Bjarke Alling.
