SmartSignatur PersonalID is a solution for individuals who need high security mail and file encryption, or need to be able to log onto systems in a secure way. PersonalID is a stand-alone Windows solution in one package.

PersonalID can be used by both individuals and companies and offers very high security through the use of asymmetric encryption and X509 certificates. The solution is suggested for lawyers, accountants, security people, journalists, researchers, certain financial roles, consultants, and as protection against industrial espionage, hackers and the like.

PersonalID can be installed and administered by the users themselves.

The high security SmartSignatur PersonalID provides is unsurpassed. The solution offers true 2-factor security, in which a PIN in combination with a chip card allows a user to sign or log on. The user’s encrypted key exists only on the chip card and cannot be used without the PIN or on systems that the user is not authorized to access. This type of 2-factor security is used for payment cards and military procedures.

A chip card is also called a smart card. It is a plastic card with a built-in microcomputer. This little computer functions when it gets power from a physical or contactless card reader. In this computer, data up to 80 kb can be stored. The user’s private key or keys are generated and stored in part of the memory area. These are protected by the chip card’s special architecture and require the user’s PIN to be used. If the PIN is entered incorrectly more than three times, the chip card is automatically blocked. It happens within the card itself. The PC that uses the card can only access it via a standard API (PKCS#11, Minidriver, Crypto Token). A chip card cannot be copied.

Chip cards are used every day all over the world. Many countries use a chip card as a national identity card. In many countries, industries like hospitals, financial institutions, military, transport use chip cards to achieve high security and good user-friendliness.

In addition to the physical chip card, the software technology is also used and supported globally. SmartSignatur PersonalID works with virtually all standard applications (for example Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, MS Outlook, Acrobat PDF) because all significant cryptographic interfaces are supported: Minidriver, PKCS#11, Crypto Token, s/mime, 2-way SSL and more.

SmartSignatur CardID is relevant for organizations that want a comprehensive solution with access control, follow-me printing, administration of ID cards and the practical daily handling of cards for employees or external consultants.

The basis for CardID is a self-service kiosk where an individual employee can print his or her own ID card for the organization. CardID can be extended with a photo module, so that the employee can also get a picture taken and then get it printed on the employee ID card.

Everything in CardID is managed by the SmartSignatur Enrollment server in the background, which means you can decide what type of card layout should be used based on the type of employee receiving the card. Usually different employee groups, external consultants, and other distinct groups have different layouts and information on their ID cards.

In order to have a new access card issued – or have a lost card re-issued – employees just stop by the SmartSignatur self-service kiosk. This is a PC with a touch screen, a printer and perhaps a camera.

At this kiosk, employees will log in with their usual log-in information and then be able to print out their access card and – if the option is selected – get a photo taken for the same card. All digital data relating to the card will be registered at the time of issue and be sent back to the SmartSignatur Enrollment server. From here, the card data will be sent to the connected door systems, follow-me printing and other systems that use NFC/RFID card data.

SmartSignatur CardID handles automatic card printing by linking the user’s normal network access with a self-service kiosk. After the user has logged in with his normal log-in information, the system will retrieve the data to be printed on the ID card along with the organization’s logo and other standard data. At the same time, the user can get a new photo taken for the card. Only data from the backend system can be printed on the card and via templates this can be managed for individual users, so that consultants can have one card layout and various employee groups another.

In the process of printing the employee ID card, all data from the card is registered in the SmartSignatur back end system. This card data is subsequently – in real time – further synchronized with the systems that will be using it. These systems can include Active Directory, ADK door system, a lunchroom payment system, follow-me printing and more.

The process of getting a physical ID card printed should be as accurate and precise as possible. It’s also important that all the data is registered so it can be checked in an audit. SmartSignatur CardID is linked to other IT systems in the organization and will automatically know when a user can have a card issued and when card access should end.
