The move to cloud with the the efficiencies, agility and ease of consumption of services, is accelerating and making old protection models and security controls less relevant – or even obsolete. As organizations move to the cloud, often with one leg still on premise, firewalls and VPN’s can no longer form a cohesive parameter and so the user in a sense becomes the parameter, and enforcement must move closer to assets.
Still, Authentication (the act of verifying users are who the say they are) for the most part has relied on passwords – and surveys shows that despite the increase in data breaches, password use is actually going up! Cloud adoption is simply outpacing security and organizations are likely defaulting to passwords, despite the inherent risks.
The good news is that IT and security professionals are looking at new ways to validate identities with a high level of assurance and to provide access to resources from anywhere, at any time and from any device, but in a manner that is both more granular and less intrusive to the user while lending more controls and visibility to the company stakeholders. This includes innovations in Single Sign-On (SSO), Authorization and Passwordless Authentication.
