New mobile app provides secure two-factor for businesses in a simple way

Press release – Copenhagen, November 22 2022

Use your mobile phone as a smart card reader for secure log on to IT systems. That’s how simple the new app MobileID can be explained, which is being launched today on Apple’s App Store and the software platform GitHub. The Danish cyber security vendor Liga is the main architect behind the app, developed in collaboration with the Alexandra Institute. The aim of the development of MobileID is to increase the cyber robustness of companies and public organizations by making complex technologies easily accessible to everyone. The solution is open source and can be downloaded and used for free.

Two-factor is a necessity – and a future requirement

The majority of all IT security breaches relate to passwords. This places new demands on security. The use of two-factor authentication via an app, a code reader or a smart card adds an extra layer of security that significantly reduces the risk of hackers gaining access to the IT systems. For the same reason, the use of two-factor is included in the 20 minimum technical requirements for security in IT solutions for government authorities in Denmark, which aims to ensure a high level of security in the government sector.

Many organizations are already well on their way to implementing the extra security layer, and with the launch of MobileID have the opportunity to add a secure and user-friendly method of authentication in combination with smart cards.

Complex technology made easily accessible

MobileID is based on PKI technology with certificates and asymmetric encryption keys, which is considered to be among the most secure in the market, but technically difficult to implement. With the launch of MobileID, complexity has been taken out of the equation, and packaged into a simple solution that can be downloaded and used for free.

Liga MobileID works as an alternative to classic card readers and works for IOS and Android. With the app installed, a mobile phone can be used to read the contents of the chip on a smart card and provide secure access to the company’s IT systems and data. This is done using the standard NFC technology that all newer mobile phones contain. The same technology that we know from contactless payment with the mobile phone in the supermarket.

Supported by Cyber Hub and Industriens Fond

MobileID has been developed in collaboration with the Alexandra Institute, which deals with research, development and innovation within IT, and is based on a grant via the CyberBoost program under Cyber Hub Denmark, financed by the Industriens Fond. MobileID will be launched on 22 November 2022.
